(34): Notes in Transition; Musings on Hausa-Fulani Brouhaha And The Possibility of Ethnic Coinage.

MA Iliasu. A sequel to my earlier essay on 20th-century economic thought is the most unexpected turn persuaded by the debates on the legitimacy of Hausa-Fulani as recognized ethnic coinage. The two essays are related not in the similarity of content but in context, from the way both are written with immense respect for upward possibilities of events and ideas. I get amused when a discourse relevant to the evolution of social organization is forcefully made to resist the possibilities of change. For change, not necessarily as Marx thought it but as we learned from what we've managed to witness in the warranted evolution of our societies, is inevitable. And if history doesn't repeat itself, the validity of accurate patterns remains undoubted. Denying that, willfully or not, is in my opinion, tantamount to unwarranted rigidity. To be candid, the decades-old debate on whether there's any group of people or an identity, ethnically or culturally fit to be called Hausa-fulani, t...

(33): Musings on 20th-Century Economic Thought.

MA Iliasu. Ideas and ideologies appear more radical and come across as more triggering when they're young, but when they mature, they calm down and settle either themselves or society into inevitable moderation. This, among others, constitutes the major takeaways from Peter De Haan's treatise, "From Keynes to Pickety", a book I discover tremendously informative not only on the evolution of Economics in the 20th century but also on the blending nature of most sociopolitical, cultural and intellectual traditions. With that in mind, I understood it's not enough to respect beliefs, ideas, ideologies, and whatever alter the possibility for objective knowledge. The same courtesy, I figured, is due to experience - the byproduct of active engagement and old age. Surely knowing a phenomenon is one thing while living to dribble through its complexities entirely another. And along that path, so much of what influences the consumption and interpretation of knowledge changes; ...

(32): Review of House of The Dragon: Episode 2 & 3

MA Iliasu. Nothing could have appeared more vividly in the first episode of the show than Lord Otto Hightower's intention of becoming the royal in-law ahead of Lord Corlys Valeryon. King Viserys had finally given in to the plan by choosing Alicent Hightower ahead of the Valeryon girl. Would that choice pay off? Nobody knows exactly, but the odds aren't looking good with Princess Rhaenyra, the chosen heir, who will have to swallow the pain of losing her dad to the bed of her best friend. That Rhaenyra favored the Valeryon girl as her new stepmom suggests her soft spot for the greatest power of the realm (House Valeryon). Afterall the Valeryons have a long history with the Targaryens. So any possible power struggle in the future with a prince of Valeryon maternity to her may appear warranted. So unlike the opportunism of the lords of the Freetown. Would Rhaenyra like any first born son by Alicent? We shall see! Interestingly, enough has been shown on the prominence of House Val...

(31): Review of House of The Dragon; Season One; Episode One.

MA Iliasu . A few hours before the pilot episode of the long-awaited prequel started airing, George R.R Martin answered at a fans session in Santa Fe, Mexico, that House of The Dragon is a different story from t he Game of Thrones, and one doesn't need to watch the latter to understand the former. I concur! However, watching the first episode of the prolific television series independent of The Game of Thrones proves harder than I thought. As soon as my watch begins, every single character cast, a word uttered, and the scene shown was either modifying my knowledge of everything in The Game of Thrones, revising it, or giving it a new dimension. The first scene was a journey to the later days of the old King Johaerys whom an undisclosed tragedy took both his sons for which he called the lords of the realm to come to Harrenhal and determine his successor. If anything can be learned from that gesture is that the introduction to the House of the Dragon is here to debunk the fallacies as...
